project description: |
This project consisted of the addition of a new first floor over an existing poorly designed 1970s ground floor extension to a medieval house in Suffolk. The aim was to improve the appearance of the house in the very specific local style which meant using a combination of render and weather-boarding to the walls and recycled tiles on the roof. The new gable-ended roof was similar in shape to the existing one, creating the familiar "double-barn" shape common in rural Suffolk and Essex.
At the same time a new staircase was inserted in the centre of the house with rooflights hidden between the two roofs. These allow daylight to penetrate deep into the heart of the house. Two new bedrooms and a shower room were created. The roof profile necessitated sloping ceilings; window seats were built-in at these locations to create small secluded niches in each new room.
