| practice statement: |
At Clague we consider the practice of architecture as surely one of the most satisfiying careers because it is a true collaboration of so many talented people. For us, creating innovative designs that meet and exceed the aspirations and vision of our clients, as well as improving the built environment for the benefit of all, is our primary objective. It is a source of pride for us that we enjoy a high level of repeat business and that a number of our designs have received recognition of excellence in national and ergional awards. Our challenge is to keep inproving. Since the firm's foundation in 1934, and more latterly the new partnership in 1988, we have been fortunate indeed to build up a large, committed and gifted team of architects and other professionals. Together they are Clague. The team shares a common goal to create a complete environment. By this we mean designing buildings and the spaces created around them, thus taking proper account of the context in which we work. We aim to produce places of exceptional character in which people will live and work. |

| practice description: | Clague is an award winning practice of architects, urban designers, interior designers and historic building consultants working from design-led studios in Canterbury, Ashford in Kent and Harpenden in Hertfordshire. The firm was established over 70 years ago and has a reputation of excellence in architecture and design. The practice is led by seven equity partners and eight salaried partners with 13 associates, working within a team of over 60 professionals. The practice is registered with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Our extensive experience, gained from designing an extremely wide variety of projects of differing type, scale and complexity throughout the UK and Ireland, has allowed us to develop invaluable knowledge that feeds into all aspects of our work. Our strong collaborative approach to working with our team of consultant professionals and clients, makes us a strong, design based team with good commercial awareness. We offer an holistic approach to the whole architectural design process from inception to successful delivery and completion. We start our architectural design projects with a rigorous analysis of the site, its surrounding context and the client’s requirements, so that our response to the brief and the site is one that always meets and often exceeds expectations in terms of function, beauty and the environment created. value through design solutions is key to our continued success. This approach has resulted in national recognition of our designs, with over 35 award wins in the last eight years. All of our work demonstrates flair and imagination, yet is sensitive to the built and natural environment, particularly in our specialist area of designing numerous urban master plans as well as individual, bespoke developments. Our philosophy is centred on the idea that good design and architecture can improve people’s quality of life, not only for those that live and work in developments but also for those that live nearby or merely visit. This philosophy is illustrated by the number of Clague designed schemes used as case studies and as examples of good design practice. CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, cites three Clague projects, all of which have won Building for Life Gold Awards. They are Lacuna at Kings Hill, the Horsebridge at Whitstable and Queen Elizabeth Park, Guildford. The new Kent Design Guide also uses two Clague-designed schemes, Horsebridge and Lacuna, as exemplars of good design. Clague recognises that the design, construction and management of buildings has a significant effect on the local and global environment. Environmental issues, including climate change through carbon emissions, pollution and resource depletion are considered at each stage of the design to ensure sustainable development. We endeavour to incorporate sustainable measures into the design and fabric of our buildings and landscape as part of our original concepts. |
